David Booth and Boomer Bikers

without comments

I recently “discovered” David Booth while looking for something to read in the lunchroom at work. I don’t normally bother with the National Post and its pro-business BS, but an image of some extreme stunt rider on a Motocross bike caught my eye. Delving deeper, I read Booth’s article “Boomer bikers riding into the sunset”.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Booth’s assessment of the situation bike makers find themselves in. Fat-ass boomers have driven the cruiser craze and as they progress from H-D to Depends the bike makers will lose the biggest cash cow they’ve ever milked, having forgotten all about new riders while falling all over each other catering to yuppie dilettantes and their craving for Viagra on two wheels.

Some of Booth’s assertions made me stop and think — like his description of motorcycling as largely a fringe activity through the ’60’s and ’70’s. Upon reflection, he’s dead right. Are there any new recruits amongst the game-boys out there? Doubt it, now that motorcycling is seen — perhaps rightly so — as an activity for old farts.
